Bright Idea #14: You Too Can Make $100,000 from a Simple Business Card

Here's a common question: What is the most important marketing tool a company has?  The answer, hands down, is: its business card.

In my conferences, I ask people to hand their business cards to a person they don't know. At that point, everyone has a card from someone else. I then ask each participant to take a good look at the card...look at details, at selling points, etc. Next, I ask them to raise their hands if the card in their hands is magnificent, outrageous, memorable, or so good that if they were not in the business, they would keep it and would call that person if they ever needed that service.

Guess what? I only get four or five hands going up out of 300 participants.

I then tell them to turn the card over and to tell me how many of them are blank on the other side.  About 80 percent of the audience raises their hand.

If you were going to war and you had one gun with six bullets, would you take three bullets out of your gun? Why, then, would you leave 50 percent of your business card's selling space blank? It makes no sense.

This Bright Idea is all about having a business card that is memorable, fantastic, one that people will keep and use when they need your service in the future.

I believe it must have all your contact information: your name, phone numbers, address, everything. Plus, you need to include, now more important than ever, your Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter addresses, your blog and Web sites, all your electronic personalities where you have a following. You need to have in that card, everyplace you can be found, online and offline.

In one of my sessions at ISSA/INTERCLEAN this October, I will show you a business card that has made me more than $100,000 in business, simply by handing it out. Register today and look for my session entitled "Let Go of the Elephant: Inspiring Principles Needed to Compete and Succeed in Today's Economy."
